For Van Bernhard’s first one man show,
it is fitting that this exhibition be staged in a setting as memorable
as the Newington Cropsey Foundation, with its legacy of American
landscape art. Bernhard is a serious practitioner of pastel painting. He
draws heavily from traditional subject matter in nature and builds on
historic themes of drama and symbolism. |

The work of Van Bernhard demonstrates and honest and
direct response to nature. His keen observation, enhanced by a
spontaneous use of color and his perception of tonal and tactile values,
create a union of composition and place. This is further strengthened by
the richness and density with which he handles the pastel medium. |

Early Dawn – Land’s End, a recent
work, allows us to see Van Bernhard at his best. The elements of earth,
sea, and sky come together in a complete expression of color, light, and
design.
