catalogue illustrates the often overlooked accomplishments of Jasper
Cropsey, who had been trained as an architect before turning his talents
toward landscape painting. |

Cropsey began his architectural career
in 1843 at the age of 20, after having apprenticed to the architectural
firm of Joseph Trench in New York for 4 years. |

|
|
Even after establishing himself as a
leading artist of the Hudson River School, Cropsey continued to accept
select architectural commissions. He designed homes for many prestigious
Americans including General Horace Porter, William Webb, and George M.
Pullman. |

In addition to his architectural work,
Cropsey also donated his time and expertise in interior design for the
Metropolitan Fair, the 7th Regiment Armory Drill Hall, and others. |
