From the exhibition catalogue:
George M. Kelly, through measured and careful observation of the living model,
strives for an harmonious verisimilitude. His art, not alone imitation, elevates the
imitative to a higher plane. Whether the pursuit be a portrait or a nude: the choice of
discreet and intelligible profiles is made in deference to the unseen soul.
The methods known to him are ancient. He invites us to explore, in his
sculptures, knowledge as practice. Penetration of perception and precision of hand are
what count most. Artistic expression arises from the sustained effort of modulating form
in the pursuit of refined surfaces.
