Icarus,
George M. Kelly

Exhibit curated by Adelia C. Rasines

Mr. Kelly was born in Philadelphia and trained in painting and sculpture at The Pennsylvaia Academy of Fine Arts. In 1978, Mr. Kelly moved to New York City where his studio is today. Mr. Kelly's works are widely collected and he has received numerous awards for his work in stone and bronze.

From the exhibition catalogue:

George M. Kelly, through measured and careful observation of the living model, strives for an harmonious verisimilitude. His art, not alone imitation, elevates the imitative to a higher plane. Whether the pursuit be a portrait or a nude: the choice of discreet and intelligible profiles is made in deference to the unseen soul.

The methods known to him are ancient. He invites us to explore, in his sculptures, knowledge as practice. Penetration of perception and precision of hand are what count most. Artistic expression arises from the sustained effort of modulating form in the pursuit of refined surfaces.

George M. Kelly

His is an irrepressible Humanism, informed by the Enlightenment and tempered to life in the late twentieth century. Optimism prevails! Originality lies more than anywhere in his ability to weave the inner-experience of living with the world outside ourselves. Thus, these sculptures contribute to the greater consciousness of the relationship between life and art.
