Scenes from a Century Past was comprised of 35 paintings of the Hudson
River School that pertain to nature and the spirit. All the works selected have spiritual
overtones, in the sense of displaying the Hudson River School belief that the hand of God
could be seen in nature. The view of America as the new Garden of Eden was a consistent
theme of the Hudson River School. Major artists such as Church, Cropsey, Bierstadt, and
Durand were represented, as well as lesser known Hudson River School artists such as
Ferguson, Duncanson, and Casilear. In terms of attendance and reviews, this exhibit has
been the most successful ever hosted by the Newington Cropsey Foundation. Catalogues of
the exhibit are available. Please
